Chitwan, comes from the full name Chituwa Ban, meaning "Leopard Forest". It is also believed to have originated from Chitta Ban, or "Heart or deep of the jungle". Another legend has it that the name of this tropical valley comes from Sita Ban, meaning "Sita's forest". Sita was the consort of Lord Ram, the hero of the great Hindu epic Ramayana.

At the foot of the Himalayas, Chitwan is one of the few undisturbed areas of the Terai region which formerly extended over the foothills of India and Nepal, with its very rich flora and fauna. One of the last populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros lives in the park, which is also among the last refuges for the Bengal tiger.
