Coconut Lagoon Resort Kumarakom

Tour the southern wonders of India on this relaxing tour of the region. Start in Cochin, seeing the city’s highlights including the famed Chinese fishing Nets, and then head to Alleppey to board your Deluxe Houseboat for an overnight cruise. Enjoy meals prepared on board by your own personal chef while cruising past the serene villages of Kerala.
Disembark in Kumarakom and relax in Kerala’s heartland of nature. Pass tall rubber trees and coffee gardens on your way to Periyar where you will tour the Wildlife Sanctuary before returning to Cochin to see a traditional Kathakali dance performance

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Cochin
Upon arrival at the airport, meet and transfer to the Le Meridien Kochi - 4* for two nights.
Day 2
Cochin (B/L)
Today, you will take a city tour of Cochin.  Sites to visit include the Dutch Palace (Closed on Fridays and Jewish Holidays), also known as Mattancherry Palace built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Cochin in 16th Century AD; The Jewish Synagogue (Closed on Fridays & Saturdays and
Jewish Holidays), built in late 16th century, the Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Cochin rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of interest; The Chinese fishing nets line the sea-front and exhibit a mechanical method of catching fish by local fishermen in Fort Kochi; St. Francis Church,
originally built by the Portuguese in 15th century and is believed to be the oldest church built by the Europeans in India.  In the afternoon, a special Kerala Cookery Session is arranged at a Kerala home, with traditional lunch.
Day 3
Cochin - Alleppey (B/L/D)
This morning, drive to Alleppey to embark on an overnight cruise of back waters on a converted Kettuvalam or traditional rice barge. Get a glimpse of life on water’s edge; this backwater journey through the narrow canals crossing exquisite villages of Kerala, embellished with lush green paddy fields, tall coconut grooves makes it a most spellbinding site. All meals will be prepared by your personal chef onboard. Overnight stay onboard a Deluxe Houseboat.
Day 4
Alleppey - Kumarakom (B)
After  breakfast disembark at Kumarakom. In the lush backwaters of Kottayam in Kerala, lies a veritable paradise, which is called Kumarakom, or the 'Venice of the East'. Palm fringed narrow canals winding through the vast expanse of paddy fields, and the neat tiny hamlets lined up along either side of the
canals are panoramic sights one can never forget. Kumarakom is Keralas heartland of lagoons, palm fringed lakes, and paddy fields, inter-linked with hundreds of winding canals, with the typical low slung country boats that carry everything from people to fish, rice and coconuts to the milkman and newspaper boy, local politicians and priests to wedding parties. Your heritage mansion is reached over the water on the Vembanad lake.  Overnight at the Coconut Lagoon Hotel - 4*.
Day 5
Kumarakom - Periyar (B)
Drive towards Periyar, set in the heart of the Cardamom Hills of Kerala which is famous for its Wildlife Sanctuary. As the road winds through mountains, you will descend through a carpet of tea bushes, estates of tall rubber trees and gardens of coffee, cardamom and pepper.  In the afternoon, take a nature walk in the wilderness of Periyar.  Stay two nights at the Spice Village - 4*.
Day 6
Periyar (B) After breakfast, take a nature tour to the Periyar sanctuary on forest department run boat rides.  Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the premier reserves of Southern India and home of the wild elephant, the bison, antelopes, langurs and sambar that can be observed from the launches that cruise the lake. Remainder of the day is at leisure for you to enjoy the facilities at the resort.
Day 7
Periyar - Cochin (B)
After a leisurely breakfast, return to Cochin. On arrival, check in to the Le Meridien Hotel - 4*.  Remainder of the day at leisure.  In the evening visit a local theatre to watch the Kathakali Dance performance. Kathakali represents a synthesis of all that is best in dance, drama and music and has been recognized by connoisseurs of art, the world over as a `total art form of immense sophistication and power’.
Day 8
Depart Cochin (B)
Head to the airport.

Travel Guide

Entry Regulations:

All Canadian citizens require a Canadian passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of your entry into the country. An entry visa is necessary to enter India. Visas must be acquired from the nearest Indian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate.

Please check with your country’s Foreign Affairs office to find out about entry requirements for non-Canadians and Americans.

Climate:

Hot tropical weather with variations from region to region. Coolest weather lasts from December to February, with cool, fresh mornings and evenings and dry, sunny days. Really hot weather when it is dry, dusty and unpleasant is between March and May. Monsoon rains occur in most regions in summer between late June to September.

Currency:

The Indian Rupee is the basic unit of currency. At present, the exchange rate is INR44.31 for CAD$1 and INR44.50 for US$1. As exchange rates fluctuate each day, please check the current exchange rate near your date of travel.

Electricity:

The current used in India is the 220V, 50-cycle system.

Tip: This system may differ from the one you use at home. If it is different, please purchase an adaptor from a travel store near you, to take advantage of the power ports in your hotel room.

Language:

India has 22 officially recognized languages, however 33 different languages and 2000 dialects have been identified in India. Hindi, in the Devanagari script is the official language of the Federal government of India. English is an associate official language.

Health Requirement:

Vaccination certificates are not required of Canadian or American tourists unless they have visited a country where Yellow Fever is endemic. If you are from another part of the world, please check with a travel medicine professional for more information on possible requirements.

Many travel illnesses are prevalent in India. Please visit a travel medicine professional wherever you are departing from.

Airport Facilities and Tax:

There are main international airports in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Calcutta. There is a departure tax of 500 Rupees, which is formulated into the price of your airline ticket.

Shopping:

Each region has its own specialties, each town its own local craftspeople and its own particular skills. For fabrics, silverware, carpets, leatherwork and antiques, India is a shopper’s paradise. Bargaining is expected. You can check for reasonable prices at state-run emporia. One of India’s main industries is textiles. Of the silks, the brocades from Varanasi are among the most famous. Rajasthan cotton with its distinctive ‘tie and dye’ design is usually brilliantly colorful, while Chennai cotton is known for its attractive ‘bleeding’ effect after a few washes.

Cuisine:

The cuisine of India is characterized by its sophisticated and subtle use of many spices and herbs. Considered by some to be one of the world's most diverse cuisines, each family of this cuisine is characterized by a wide assortment of dishes and cooking techniques. Diversity is a defining feature of India's geography, culture, and food. Indian cuisine varies from region to region.
