Entry Regulations:

Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into South Korea. Canadians do not require a visa for stay of up to six months and American citizens do not require a visa for a stay of up to 30 days. All visitors must have a valid return/onward ticket.

Please check with your country’s Foreign Affairs office to find out about entry requirements for non-Americans.

Climate:

South Korea has four seasons: Spring in late March through May with periods of cold weather and temperate conditions; Summer in June to early September, usually hot and humid with rainfall occurring during the monsoon months of late June to July and mid-July through mid-August as the hottest period; Autumn in September through November that is characterized by warm days and clear weather making these months the most pleasant time of the year; and, winter in December to mid-march with cold and dry spells and a traditional cycle of three cold days followed by four warm ones.

Currency:

The South Korean Won (KRW) is the basic unit of currency.  At present, the rate of exchange is  KRW1,149 to USD$1. As exchange rates fluctuate each day, please check the current exchange rate near your date of travel.

Electricity:

The current is 110/220 volts AC, 60Hz. Government policy is to phase out the 110-volt supply and many hotels now have a 220-volt supply. Be very careful and always check the rating on equipment before you plug it in.

Tip: This system may differ from the one you use at home. If it is different, please purchase an adaptor from a travel store near you, to take advantage of the power ports in your hotel room.

Language:

The official language is Korean with some English in major centers.

Health Requirement:

Normally, vaccinations are not longer required unless one travels from or via an infected area. Check with your local health authority for further requirements.

Airport Facilities and Tax:

Korea has three international airports: Kimpo International Airport in Seoul (the main gateway to Korea), Kimhae International Airport in Pusan and Cheju International Airport on Chejudo Island. Although there are no departure taxes, there may be a Passenger Service Charge, if this was not included in the price of your ticket.

Shopping:

Korea's shops and department stores are many and varied. Seoul offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities from department stores and duty-free shops to arcades, specialized shopping districts and outdoor markets. But shopping is not limited to Seoul. All major cities also have department stores, souvenir shops and arcades and there are benefits to shopping in the regional cities. Local specialties are sold at lower prices and it is often possible to watch them being produced.

Cuisine:

Korea is famous for its many native dishes. Its cuisine will provide unique tastes for the visitor. There are also a wide variety of American, Continental, Chinese and Japanese restaurants.
